The Whole Wide World Is Waiting: A New Painting by Adam Hall

Posted by Robert Lange on

There’s something beautiful about the moment when you realize your life is about to change, even if you have no idea what comes next.

In his newest painting, Whole Wide World Is Waiting, artist Adam Hall captures that feeling of anticipation, possibility, and the quiet excitement of an unwritten future. Inspired by the song of the same name by Adam's friend Michael Logan, the painting imagines a world of possibility about life ahead.

“As I painted it, I imagined a young couple on a rooftop, newly in love, looking out over the city lights and dreaming about the life ahead of them,” Hall explains. “There’s that feeling of knowing the place you’re in won’t be where you stay forever, even if you don’t yet know where you’re headed.”

The painting is part of Hall’s upcoming exhibition, The Interim, a collection exploring the spaces between endings and beginnings. Throughout the show, Hall considers how much of our lives are spent in transition, suspended between the familiar and the unknown.

In Whole Wide World Is Waiting, the city represents everything we know, while the distant horizon offers a glimpse of everything we have yet to discover.

“I wanted to capture that quiet moment before taking a leap, when uncertainty and possibility exist together,” Hall says. “It’s a painting about longing, hope, and the feeling that there’s still so much life waiting to be lived.”

And this particular painting has another exciting chapter ahead of it. Whole Wide World Is Waiting is also set to appear in the upcoming 2027 baseball film The Comebacker, starring Tom Hanks. We love the idea of Adam’s artwork finding its way into a film, reaching an entirely new audience and becoming part of another creative story.

Perhaps that's what makes the painting so relatable. We've all stood at the edge of something new, wondering what might be waiting for us. And sometimes, the most beautiful part of the journey is that brief moment before it begins.

The Interim opens December 4, 2026, from 5–8 PM at Robert Lange Studios in Charleston, during the French Quarter Art Walk. The exhibition continues through December 28.
