Next Artist in Residency will be Will Hutnick

Posted by Robert Lange on

We are thrilled to announce that our next Artist in Residency will be Will Hutnick, an artist, curator, and arts organizer whose work and leadership have shaped contemporary art communities in New York and beyond.

Will Hutnick

Hutnick comes to us as the juror for our 2026 Young Contemporaries exhibition, a distinction that brings with it not only the responsibility of selecting work, but also a deeper engagement with artists and our town. This week, he will be spending time here for artist talks and studio visits, offering participating artists a rare opportunity for dialogue, feedback, and connection with an established voice in the field.

In tandem with his role as juror, Hutnick will open his solo exhibition, Call Me When You Land, on January 22, 2026. The exhibition will present new and recent paintings that reflect his signature approach: layered, rhythmic compositions that move between abstraction and representation. His work often draws from natural forms, digital interference, and queer experience, creating surfaces that feel both intuitive and carefully constructed. Color, repetition, and subtle disruption play key roles, inviting viewers to slow down and look closely. The show will be at the Simmons Center.

In addition to his studio practice, Hutnick is widely respected for his curatorial and organizational work. He served as artist, curator, and co-director of Ortega y Gasset Projects in Brooklyn from 2015 to 2020, helping to guide the space through a period of ambitious programming and community building. He is also the Director of Artistic Programming at the Wassaic Project in upstate New York, where he continues to support emerging and mid career artists through exhibitions, residencies, and large scale collaborative initiatives.

The 2026 Young Contemporaries exhibition will also include the awarding of the Jurick Prize, our annual scholarship granted to one outstanding artist in the exhibition. The Jurick Prize reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting artists at pivotal moments in their development, and we are honored to present it as part of this year’s program.

We are excited to welcome Will Hutnick to our community and look forward to the conversations, connections, and work that will unfold during his residency.
