Our August Feature

Posted by Robert Lange on

Robert Lange Studios is pleased to present Our Old Friend Autumn, a new body of work by contemporary landscape painter Brett Scheifflee. The exhibition will be available throughout August by chance and by appointment while the gallery undergoes building renovations.

For more than two decades, Scheifflee has quietly established himself as one of the country's most respected contemporary landscape painters, creating works that capture not only the appearance of a place, but the feeling of being there. In Our Old Friend Autumn, he turns his attention to a season that has long occupied a special place in both the American imagination and his own artistic journey.

The exhibition explores autumn as more than a time of year. In Scheifflee's hands, it becomes a familiar companion and a reminder that change can be beautiful, that endings often contain their own quiet grace, and that nature has always been our greatest teacher when it comes to letting go.

Bathed in golden light, rich ochres, fading greens, and distant blue shadows, the paintings depict fields, forests, marshes, and winding roads suspended in that fleeting moment when summer yields to fall. The scenes feel both specific and universal, inviting viewers to revisit places they know while simultaneously recalling memories of places long gone.

"When I think about the moments that first inspired me to become a landscape painter, they were often these temporary but astounding transitions in nature," says Scheifflee. "Autumn has always felt like an old friend returning each year with the same lesson—to appreciate what is here now because it won't stay forever."

Scheifflee's paintings have long been celebrated for their ability to stop time. Whether depicting fog drifting across a marsh, the final glow of dusk, or a season on the verge of changing, his work reminds us that some of life's most profound experiences occur quietly and without announcement.

"There is a deep sense of gratitude woven through Brett's paintings," says gallery owner Robert Lange. "His work encourages us to slow down and notice the world around us. In this series, autumn becomes a metaphor for life's larger rhythms—the beauty of change, the comfort of familiarity, and the understanding that letting go is often part of what makes something beautiful in the first place."

As Robert Lange Studios navigates a season of restoration and renovation within its historic Queen Street building, Our Old Friend Autumn feels particularly timely. Like the season itself, the exhibition serves as a reminder that transformation is a natural and necessary part of every story.
