From our Framer: Floater Frame Install

Posted by Robert Lange on

Many of our artists have opted to use floater frames and clients are often updating a collection with a more modern look by swapping to the clean lines of a floater. Below is a how-to install guide from our framer. Enjoy!

Floater Frames for Panels: The Simplest Way to Achieve a Perfect Install

Floater frames for panel artwork require a slightly different approach than canvas—but when done correctly, they produce one of the cleanest, most professional presentations possible.

Panel artwork—whether cradled wood, masonite, or aluminum—pairs naturally with floater frames. The clean edges and structural stability create a modern, gallery-quality result.

At Articient, we’ve simplified the process by designing floater frames specifically for panels—so installation is fast, precise, and consistent every time.

Why Panels Are Ideal for Floater Frames

Panels offer several advantages:

  • rigid, stable structure
  • clean, finished edges
  • consistent thickness

Unlike canvas, panels don’t require stretching or tensioning, which allows for a much simpler mounting approach.

The Articient Difference: Pre-Installed Tall Spacers

Articient floater frames for panels come with pre-installed tall spacers built directly into the frame.

This is a major advantage. Instead of building up internal supports or adjusting depth manually; the frame is already configured for the correct setback and spacing.

Designed for Common Panel Thicknesses

One of the most important factors when choosing a floater frame for panel artwork is matching the frame to the thickness of the panel.

Articient builds custom spacer depths to accommodate:

  • 1/8" panels
  • 1/4" panels
  • 1/2" panels

Each frame is designed so that the panel sits slightly back from the face of the frame.

This creates:

  • a subtle shadow line
  • clean separation
  • a refined, gallery-quality look

Floater Frame for 1/8 Inch Panels

Thin panels require precision.

A proper floater frame for a 1/8 inch panel must:

  • support the panel evenly
  • maintain consistent spacing
  • allow for clean visual alignment

Articient’s spacer system provides a stable surface that makes accurate positioning straightforward.

The Installation Process

With the spacers already in place, installation becomes straightforward.

Step 1: Center the Panel on the Spacers

Place the panel on top of the spacers and visually center it within the frame.

Take a moment to ensure:

  • even spacing on all sides
  • proper alignment

Step 2: Apply Glue to the Spacers

Once centered, carefully lift or tilt the panel and apply a light amount of glue to the top of the spacers.

Important: Do not over-apply glue

You want enough adhesion to hold the panel securely without excess buildup.

  • Wood glue is appropriate for most panel types, including wood panels and masonite
  • Silicone adhesive (neutral-cure) is recommended for aluminum substrates, gatorboard, and other non-porous material

Step 3: Set the Panel in Place

Return the panel to the centered position on the spacers.

Because the spacer height is already set:

  • the panel sits at the correct depth
  • spacing remains consistent

Step 4: Apply Light, Even Pressure

For smaller panels, one book placed on top is usually sufficient.

For larger pieces, use multiple books and distribute weight evenly around the edges.

The goal is light, even pressure, not force.

Step 5: Allow the Glue to Set

Let the adhesive cure fully before moving or hanging the piece.

Once set, the panel will be secure, aligned, and ready to hang.

Glue vs. Alternative Methods for Panel Framing

When installing panel artwork in a floater frame, the goal is to secure the panel cleanly without compromising the artwork.

Why Screws Are Not Recommended

Unlike canvas, panel artwork should not be screwed into the frame.

Screws can permanently damage the panel and are generally avoided by artists and professionals

Why Velcro Is Not Ideal

Some installers use adhesive Velcro as an alternative.

However, Velcro can degrade over time and lose holding strength. This can lead to shifting, misalignment, and long-term instability.

Why Adhesive + Spacer Systems Work Best

Using a floater frame for panel with built-in spacers and adhesive provides a clean and reliable installation method.

This approach offers:

  • strong, stable hold
  • consistent spacing
  • no visible hardware
  • a refined, gallery-quality presentation

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best floater frame for panel artwork?

All Articient floater frames are designed to accommodate our built-in spacers to provide the consistent results when framing panel artwork.

Can you use a floater frame for a 1/8 inch panel?

Yes, absolutely.  Articient’s tall spacers provide the ideal positioning and support for thin panels in floater frames.

What glue should be used for panel framing?

Wood glue works for most panels, while neutral-cure silicone is recommended for aluminum.

Final Thoughts

Floater frames are the ideal solution for panel artwork—but the installation method should be just as refined as the final result.

With Articient’s pre-installed spacer system, artists can achieve a clean, precise, and professional installation with minimal effort.
