A New Reign: Charleston Steps Aside—And That’s Exactly What We Needed

Posted by Robert Lange on

For 12 astonishing years—since 2013—Charleston proudly held the title of Travel + Leisure’s “Best U.S. City” but yesterday, that crown passed, as Santa Fe, NM claimed the top spot, with New Orleans taking second and Charleston slipping to third.

Why This Change Is a Win for The Gallery—and for Charleston

Losing status might sting for the ego, but for the city—as for our gallery—it could be a healthy reset. Here’s why:

Cooling the Hot Real Estate Market
Charleston’s record run fueled intense tourism and demand, pushing property values and rent through the roof. Stepping back from the spotlight could ease pressure on housing and rental prices, making room for more local artists, staff, and gallery visitors. We saw our rent double a few years ago and although I'm pretty sure we have the best landlords in the world, it has been a hefty bill to pay each month.

I also hope that this means that artists can afford to move to Charleston. It's been years since I've heard an artist say, "We just moved here."

A Natural Pause on Overcrowding
We are hoping that with fewer tourism headlines, the city can breathe again—less crowded sidewalks (maybe some parking spaces), more meaningful visits, and stronger connections between our gallery and genuine local art lovers. For 12 years, Charleston basked in “best city” glow. Now, without that title emblazoned on every billboard, there's space to cultivate deeper community ties, to nurture emerging local talent, and to ensure our gallery remains rooted in meaningful growth—not media hype.

I also think that living up to the "best of" brand has been hard.  When we first opened and moved here people didn't feel like they need to weigh-in on if it was "really" the best city. Now they can just visit without trying to decide if it lives up to the fanfare.

Celebrating a Gallery Win—At Just the Right Moment

Coincidentally, this week we’ve been named Best Gallery in Charleston by Charleston Travel & Leisure magazine. The local shout out feels like it is a nice reminder that our community is what fuels the gallery we love. (I'll write a large blog post about our win tomorrow).

This honor reminds us that although we’re no longer in the #1 city, our dedication to curated excellence, community engagement, and artistic innovation remains unmatched. In fact, shedding the “best city” hype may actually spotlight the real feats happening right here in our creative space.

Embracing Balance

Imagine a Charleston where growth is sustainable, not explosive. Where galleries like ours thrive because they’re woven into the fabric of the community—not just tourist must-sees. This is the equilibrium many have hoped for.

So yes, losing the top city title might sting—but for our gallery—and for Charleston’s future—it just might be the best thing that could happen. I guess we'll see.

Here’s to a more balanced, intentional, and artful next chapter.
