STATEMENT : JULIE HENSON
My recent work takes root in the principals and experience of family life in the South. Born and raised in Charleston, SC, I grew up in a pre Civil War home with a family steeped in Southern tradition and history.
Just as photographs contain a narrative, these works tell a hidden story. My sculptures and drawings offer nostalgic clues into the past. Vessels cast in beeswax and glycerin are vintage shells of their former selves;
Ghostly gestures captured on transparent mylar suggest fragility and absence - figures bound together and suspended in time. The reductive forms and isolation of the subjects aid in the subtle references of southern tradition, the bonds of family and the quiet impressions left by preceding generations.
